Cyber Security News April
Quantum Cryptography Advancements
Researchers at the Technical University of Denmark made significant progress in quantum cryptography earlier this year. Seeing the successful demonstration of a Continuous Variable Quantum Key Distribution (CV QKD) system that achieved quantum-secure key distribution across an unprecedented 100 km distance via fiber optic cables.
This demonstrates the compatibility of advanced quantum encryption with existing internet infrastructure, addressing one of the major challenges in the adoption of quantum cryptography.
The research article stated that ‘Our results mark a substantial milestone for realizing CV quantum access networks with a high loss budget and pave the way for large-scale deployment of secure QKD’.

Data Breach Updates for April
An updated list of reported data breaches can be found by reading the below article. Recent updates for the month of April 2024 include 3 notable breaches:
- US Government Data Breach: A Serbian hacking group claims to have breached Space-eyes, an intelligence corporation working with the US Department of Justice, the Department of Homeland Security, and teams within the Armed Forces. Hackers claim to have stolen highly confidential documents pertaining to services the company had provided to the government.
- Giant Tiger Data Breach: Canadian retailer Giant Tiger releaved in mid-April that it had suffered a data breach of almost 3 million customer records. Containing email addresses, names, physical addresses, and phone numbers.
- Roku Data Breach: Roku, the streaming provider, has reported that during the monitoring of a security incident back in March, it discovered a further 576,000 additional customer accounts that had been affected by the data breach. The company stated that ‘We notified affected customers in early March and continued to monitor account activity closely to protect our customers and their personal information.’

Supply Chain Security Challenges
In a reaction to the SolarWinds supply chain attack, organizations are reevaluating their third-party software vendors and implementing stricter controls to prevent similar incidents.
As hackers continue to leverage weak security practices and the tremors of a noteable attack like SolarWinds are still prominent in 2024, supply chain security is still one of the top priorities for organisations and governments.

Cyber Attacks Shift From Government to Big Tech
The beginning of 2024 has seen a change in targets for bad actors. In a recent article on Spiceworks, it has been said that ‘State-sponsored cyber attackers were expected to target governments primarily, particularly owing to growing global tensions; cyberattacks have increasingly shifted their focus towards big tech companies.’
Given the increasingly vital role of technology in modern society, understanding the change in the global geopolitical landscape is crucial to implementing effective strategies and controls to stay ahead of cyber threats.
