The Cost of Battling Malinformation

Enterprises worldwide are grappling with the impact of malinformation. The battle against misinformation, disinformation, and fake news is projected to cost organisations more than $500 billion.

The convergence of AI, analytics, behavioural science, social media and Internet of Things (IoT) empowers malicious actors to produce and disseminate highly impactful, individually tailored malinformation or misinformation.

This level of spending is predicted to consume 50% of marketing and cybersecurity budgets.

Data Breach Updates for May

An updated list of reported data breaches can be found by reading the below article. Recent updates for the month of May 2024 include 4 notable breaches:

  • Helsinki City Council Data Breach: On May 13th it was reported that local government systems in the Finnish capital of Helsinki had suffered a data breach after a targeted attack against their education systems. Students and guardians may have had their personal information stolen by the threat actor via a remote access server.
  • JPMorgan Chase Data Breach: As reported by the Maine District Attorney's Office, half a million people banking with JPMorgan Chase could have had their personal information stolen from the company's systems due to a software flaw. Although no evidence suggests the data has been leaked anywhere, the data may have been accessed by authorised parties associated with or working with the bank.
  • Dell Data Breach: On May 9th Dell informed customers that their data may have been compromised after an attack on their customer portal. It is reported that no financial information was accessed however, customer home addresses and order information may have been compromised. Details on hacker forums suggest that details of 49 million customers have been obtained.
  • Dropbox Data Breach: The Dropbox Sign service was reported to have been accessed by a threat actor. Dropbox has informed users that the actor was able to see data including email addresses, phone numbers, hashed passwords and MFA details. Dropbox cloud customers were reported to be unaffected by this breach.
